They help the reader to understand what the story or event was all about. They also help students write a better book report. They are used in all grades of school, high school term papers, college papers, police reports, newspaper reporting, and in many other types of jobs in life. Of course, it is not always necessary to use all of them.

Where?  Where did it take place? (Such as: City, State, Country, Home, Town, Street, at School, at a Store, at Church, or wherever)

Why?  Why did it happen? OR Why did the person or animal do what they did in the story?

How? How did it happen? (Was it a good thing or bad thing? Was there something for you to learn from the story or event?  If you could change the story, how would you?)

How old? How old is the person, place, thing, or animal in your story?

How much? This could number of quanity or value.

Which?  Which event happened first, second, third, fourth and so on?  (This is called creating a timeline of events.)
